The politics of sex: Spain appoints a “minister of sex”

The first world is grappled with a more serious problem than economy or security: It is depopulation. A sharp decline in population in some of these countries is giving stakeholders sleepless nights. Uncontrolled depopulation has its adverse on the growth of any nation. This is because there would be fewer able-bodied persons to go into the workforce. And in countries where the pension systems were maintained by the current generation of retirees would have a huge problem getting more contributions to keep the pensions afloat. Not to talk about a sharp reduction in taxes that may threaten the smooth execution of governmental policies!

The rush for sex

To prevent this issue from exploding into a catastrophe, many leaders in the developed countries are urging families to make more babies or encouraging singles to get settled and set up families. But it appears such subtle appeals have not been working and now some governments are breaking taboos (about talking sex publicly) and compelling their citizens to get serious with the issue of increasing their national birth-rates.

A few days ago, the Spanish Government appointed the first “minister of sex” in a bid to encourage couples to make love regularly and produce children. Just of recent, a Swedish politician, Per-Erik Muskos canvassed that couples be given one, paid hour per day just for the purpose of having sex. Other governments have taken drastic steps to address this issue — some offered more paid holidays for couples to stay longer together; others are providing social amenities for singles to mingle freely.

Why couples aren’t making love regularly

Recent research findings on sex indicate that many couples shy away from love-making because of these three main factors:

  • Financial concerns — Even though some couples would like to spend more time together but the need to make money and maintain their lifestyles tear them apart.
  • Emotional detachment — Some couples have lost the glow in their relationships, hence they stay apart from one another.
  • Physiological issue — health issues that affect the performance of either of the couples may threaten their sex life.

To resolve the headache of declining birth-rates, it is imperative that governments devise strategies to deal with the three factors highlighted above.
